Big D There are five, core, unprovable assumptions that anti-abortion leaders proclaim to be completely true. If even ONE of these five assumptions is not also verifiable, factual reality, then passing anti-abortion laws constitutes religious tyranny, and enforcing such laws is a disguised form of religious persecution.

1) At every human conception, God creates a brand new soul:

When the anti-abortionists use the word “conception,” they are not referring simply to the biology of male and female cells uniting. They are referring to an additional process -- a process where God steps in and, by an act of instantaneous, supernatural, transcendental magic, transforms every uniting human egg and sperm into an eternal, everlasting life-spirit called a human being.

2) Independent human life begins at conception:

They believe that God magically transforms every uniting egg and sperm into a new, separate, sovereign, individual, human being. Where that union occurs is irrelevant. It could be in a woman's womb, in a laboratory petri dish or as part of a freak accident on the sidewalk in front of Macy's. They believe this brand new human being did not exist the moment before conception, but will continue to exist forever more. Therefore, from the anti-choice viewpoint, independent human life begins at conception.

3) A human being is his or her physical body:

With absolutely no evidence to support their claim, anti-abortionists declare that, at conception, God creates each human being as his/her physical body (in the form of a fertilized egg). In spite of the fact that the egg has been a integral part of the woman's body since her birth and in spite of the fact that the egg cannot survive on its own, they simply ignore the rights and wishes of the pregnant woman and proclaim the fertilized egg to be a complete, independent human being.

While standing on this unprovable declaration, they then proclaim that anything which interrupts the life of that egg is an act of murder. Then while standing on both of these unprovable assertions, they go on to proclaim that, "Because ending the life of an egg is murder, abortion, stem cell research, and the use of RU-486 should be illegal."

4) More Transcendental Magic:

These same people who declare they are their physical bodies go on to proclaim that, at death, by another act of God’s transcendental magic, they suddenly become something other than their earthly bodies and go someplace above the clouds to live forever without their physical bodies. Again, there is no scientific evidence whatsoever to support this transformation from “humans who are their bodies” into “beings who are something other than their bodies.”

Big D There is absolutely no proof whatsoever that any of these four assumptions are true. These beliefs directly contradict the religious beliefs of millions of their fellow Christians as well as the religious beliefs of billions of non-Christians who believe they are eternal, divine beings who temporarily inhabit human bodies. This minor detail is completely ignored by the anti-abortion leaders. Here's the fifth assumption:

5) Freedom of Religion is for Christians Only:

Jews, Moslems, liberal Christians, Native Americans, and the billions of humans (such as Hindus and Buddhists) who believe in reincarnation do not deserve the right to practice their own religions. The anti-abortion leaders also deny the rights of agnostics, atheists, and the millions of Americans who believe in God, but don't participate in any of the organized religions. According to the anti-abortionists, all non-Christians are heathens who must be converted to the Christian faith and be baptized. Otherwise, God will abandon these people and refuse them access to heaven.

Big D The anti-abortion story has several additional self-conflicting elements.

T.L.C. Like what?

Big D First, let me remind you that according to the Anti-abortionist's beliefs, the Christian Bible is the complete message form God, it's God's only sacred book, it's one-hundred percent accurate, and it is to be interpreted literally word for word.

Here's the conflict: At the same time the fundamentalist Christians believe in the literal interpretation of their Bible, they ignore Genesis 2:7* which clearly say that, according to God, life begins with the first breath. And they ignore Ecclesiastes 11:5, RSV** Which clearly distinguishes between the body and the spirit and also says that humans don’t know when the spirit enters the physical form.

* Genesis 2:7 -- "And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul."

** Ecclesiastes 11:5, RSV -- "As you do not know how the spirit comes to the bones in the womb of the woman with child, so you do not know the work of God who makes everything."

T.L.C. So abortion is terminating a life only if the Genesis 2:7 in the Christian Bible is false.

Big D Yup.

T.L.C. Wait a minute! That doesn't make any sense.. How can they believe every word in the Bible is literally true and, at the same time, believe that Genesis 2:7 is false?

Big D Why don't you ask them that questions?

T.L.C. OK. I will.

Big D But don't hold your breath waiting for an answer. These are the topics they want kept out of public discussions.

T.L.C. Now that you've explained the three different views of life (atheism, reincarnation and two varieties of Christianity) tell me which one is correct? Which one is real?

Big D That’s where you get to bring your mind into your religion and make your own decision.

T.L.C. Are you saying I shouldn't simply believe what others tell me?

Big D Definitely not! And don't believe what I tell you either. Even the available technical data has to be interpreted as to what it means. When you look at an issue where you can draw more than one conclusion from the evidence, who’s to say which conclusion is the correct one? Any interpretations related to religion are in the realm of speculation, conjecture, guesswork, and personal opinions.

Remember, no matter which of the three basic, religious assumptions you believe in, your belief calls for a leap of faith. Which way are you going to jump?
