Almost Believable Myths

Unmasking the Illusions

    in Our So-Called

       Normal and

            Healthy Behavior:

         The following,  almost-believable myths
         are shared with you just in case you might be ready
         to stop believing in some of them.

.

Page summary

An examination of:

***  The almost-believable beliefs we never question.

***  The beliefs most of us accept as truth
         simply because almost everyone else does.

***  The socially accepted illusions that have gotten humans
         (as a species) into such dire trouble that human extinction
         is now a real possibility.

Cultural  Myths that Are
     No Longer Believed

*     The earth is flat as any fool can plainly see.

*     The Earth is the center of the universe.

*     Minute life forms such as bacteria do not exist.

*     It is impossible for a human to run a mile in four minutes.

The record for the fastest mile run  (as of December, 1999)  is 3 minutes and 46 seconds.

*     If we were meant to fly we would have wings.

*     The CAT Scan is a pipe dream.   It will never work.

*     Rockets to the moon are impossible.

*     Seeing is believing.

*     Women are property, belonging first to their birth family and then to their husband.

Think About These Ideas for a Moment

***

Most of us agree that it's wrong and evil for one person to murder another human being, but for most governments, committing murder is a common practice.  How many people does it take to make committing murder right and good?

***

Do you ever wonder why things that are illegal cost so much money?  For example, why do the flowers and leaves from a common weed (marijuana) that grows profusely by itself almost anywhere cost more per ounce than gold?   And do you ever wonder why the common mind altering drug called "Ecstasy" sell for $20 a tablet when it cost only pennies to make?   Do you ever wonder what happens to all that extra money?

Is it possible that our good intentions are making the least ethical people on the planet the wealthiest people on the planet?  What evil deeds are being financed by our good intentions?  One answer that question recently came to light -- money from the sale of heroin was financing the Afghanistan Taliban.

***

Do you ever wonder why it's OK to kill people who don't want to die, but it's wrong to assist in the passing those who do want to die?

***

Individuals do not have the right to use violence or threat of violence to force other people to pay them money, however if a group of people gets together and calls themselves a government, they somehow, magically acquire the right to use violence or threat of violence to force people to pay them money.   When Al Capone's gang of hoodlums did this, it was called extortion.   When Government's gang of hoodlums (IRS) does it, It’s called taxation.

So you ask, "Without taxation, how do we support our governments?"   The answers is simple to find but impossible to implement because current power structures will never allow it to be.  Here's the answer:  All the natural resources on the planet belong to all humanity and not to corporations or private individuals.  If we had the God-given right to our own property, we would all have enough abundance to live a decent life and the need for taxation would instantly become an antiquated albatross.

***

Corporations pay taxes.   (Corporations do not pay taxes.   They simply collect extra money from their customers and pass that money along to their governmental counterparts.)

***

You can’t borrow my bicycle if I don’t have a bicycle.   You can’t borrow my car if I don’t have a car.   You can’t borrow my coat if I don’t have a coat.   So did you ever wonder how the U. S. government could possibly borrow three+ trillion dollars from The Federal Reserve ° Banks and then get you and I to pay over 100 billion dollars every year in interest on that nonexistent money?

Which of the Following Statements

       Are True?

             And Which Are Not?

***

Because I’m right then the others must be wrong.   If others are right then I must be wrong.

***

If I take some action, even though it can’t possibly produce the desired result, at least I can say I’m working on solving the problem.  (This is know as" futile gesturing.")

***

If we don’t like something, all we have to do is pretend it doesn’t exist.   If it suits our purpose, we can deny anything, including God, logic, reason, the evidence,  and anything else that gets between us and what we want.  We can also deny responsibility for the natural consequences that come to us as a result of our actions (or lack of actions).

***

When something goes wrong all we need to do is find someone to blame for the problem and then simply throw him or her out.   That will solve the problem and completely relieve the rest of us of our responsibility.

***

We can destroy our earthly environment and still not be subject to serious, life-threatening consequences.

***

We are each separate individuals.   We just happen to be sharing the same Earth.

***

Scientific theories are subject to logic and reason.   The evidence that support them is thoroughly examined, questioned, and subjected to intense scrutiny, BUT...

Anything written in our sacred book cannot be questioned, examined or even looked at with anything in mind except complete acceptance.

***

If it's written in a (non-fiction) book it must be true.  It it's written in a sacred book, no only is it true, that truth must never be questioned.

***

If it’s written in my religious book, it must be true.   If it’s written in any anyone else’s religious book, it’s just a false myth.

***

Except for a select few revered leaders, God no longer talks to human beings; therefore, the only way to know what God wants you to do is to find a revered leader and follow his instructions.   And, of course, you must pay money and reverence to these revered leaders for the privilege of knowing what God wants you to do.

***

I and billions of my fellow religious devotees know that the religion we adhere to in is the one and only true religion,  that every other religion is false,  and that our sacred book is the only sacred text that was ever inspired by God.

***

The religious hocus pocus that religious leaders peddle is so preposterous that it can't possibly be true; therefore, there is no intelligence behind the universe.   Everything in the universe happened by chance.

***

Morality can be legislated.

***

Morality is a sexual behavior issue.   Sexual behavior is a morality issue.

***

Although lies of commission (intentionally telling lies) are bad, lies of omission (intentionally omitting portions of the truth)  is moral, just and an OK thing to do.

***

God needs my help in punishing the unfaithful.

***

Individuals do not have the right to use violence or threat of violence to force people to alter their behavior, however if a group of people gets together and calls themselves a government, they somehow, magically acquire the right to use violence or threat of violence to force people to alter their behavior.

***

People who are different from me -- people with different religious beliefs, skin color, eye shape, nationality, social customs, sexual behavior, etc --  are bad people.   People who don't behave the way I think they should are bad people.

***

It's OK to kill the spirit and the intention of laws and rules as long as I honor the letter of that law or rule.   It's OK to bend and manipulate the laws/rules any way that you can get away with.   And as long as I don’t actually break the laws/rules, I am moral and right.  (The insurance companies provide an excellent example of this.  They are prohibited by law from basing their fees on where the insured person lives, so the base their fees on the zip code of where the car is garaged.)

***

Governments solve problems.  People who run governments tell the truth.

***

Even though my personal life sucks, I know better than you do about how you should run your life.

***

Someone else knows more about how I should live my life than I do.

***

We were born in sin and are inherently evil.

***

God murdered his son to prove he loves you.

***

Because my parents believed it and taught it to me when I was a little child, I must be true.

***

If a billion of us believe the same thing,  it must be true.

***

Anything non-physical is the myth.   Physical reality is the only truth.   If you can't count it, dissect it, or measure it, it doesn't exist.

***

There is nothing I can do that will make any difference.

***

Atheism is true.   I am my physical body.

Christian one-life-ism is true.   I am my physical body.

Reincarnation is true.   I am my not my physical body.

***

Only the fittest have a right to survive.   Money and power make me the fittest.

***

Might makes right.

***

I've already made up my mind.   Don't confuse me with the facts.

***

What’s legal and what right & moral are the same thing.

And how often
   have you heard these lines?

*     It’s impossible.

*     It’s inevitable.

*     It can’t be any other way.

*     Be reasonable.   Do it my way.

*     I could never do that.   I would never do that.

*     When are you going to get a real job?

*     Money doesn’t grow on trees.

*     What will they think?

*     The check is in the mail.

*     I only want to put the tip in.

*     I didn’t do it.   It’s (___someone else’s__)  fault.

*     I’ll call you tomorrow.

*     Trust me.  I know.

*     Because I said so!   That’s why.”

*     It will never happen to me.

*     Do as I say, not as I do.

And What do you Believe?

***

If you believe something,  does that make it true?   If billions of people believe that same thing, does that make it true?   When truths collide, how do you know which truth is the real truth?

***

Well, of course, our way is the only right and the only true way and everyone who does not look, believe, talk, or act as we do, is weird, deviant, and strange.

***

Hitler said,  “Tell a lie  big enough,  loud enough,  and say it often enough  and people will believe it.”

***

So,  what do you Believe?   Are you sure your right?
